“What is this world coming to?!” “This crazy world we’re living in.” We hear variations of these statements all the time. And let’s be honest, they’re entirely accurate. The world is a scary place and frankly, it gets more alarming by the day. So how are we supposed to maintain a positive outlook and keep our faith when it seems like the world is crumbling around us?
The answer is simple…but it’s not easy. The simple answer is dedicating our lives fully to Jesus Christ and allowing Him to guide our lives. One of my favorite Bible passages is Psalm 121. “I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” I find great comfort in knowing that the God of the universe cares for me. He is for you always.
But you know what’s not easy? Keeping your focus on Christ and His plan when you are surrounded by constant distraction and temptation. Not to mention the unrelenting push to conform to societal expectations of tolerance and acceptance. By design, Christians are to be set apart. Please do not misunderstand, set apart does not mean better. We all sin and fall short. There is no perfect Christian, and if anyone claims to be anything close to perfect, they are fundamentally wrong. Matthew 7:13-14 explains what set apart means. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to distraction, and many will enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few will find it.” We are called to walk the narrow way, which leads to eternal life found only through Christ.
Listen, the wide gate is appealing. Our society is full of beautiful, fascinating things that can be detrimental to our spiritual life. Hollywood is mesmerizing. The music industry is magnetic. Accepting that all the sin in the world is just okay would certainly be easier than receiving persecution for standing up for Biblical truth. Okay, let me be clear. I watch movies and I listen to music. I am not saying that everything is bad. I’m saying we have to guard our hearts. What is in our hearts, will show in our lives. Please look up song lyrics and pay attention to movie themes. It will shock you. (We’ll talk more about this another time 😉) There are many more factors that affect us; however, the impact of pop culture cannot be understated. It is vital that we study God’s word and pray for discernment to know what is right for us. He will show us what is good in our lives.
To be completely transparent, this has been a huge struggle for me. Being in the world but not of the world is a constant battle that all Christians fight. We will never be perfect, but Christian life isn’t about perfection. It’s about striving to be like Christ and sharing His truth and love with the world. Each and every follower of Christ is called to fulfill the Great Commission. Matthew 28:16-20 tells us to go unto all the world and preach the gospel and make disciples of Christ. You don’t have to go to foreign nations to preach; your life is your mission field! Let the world see God in you. You never know the impact you could have on someone’s life. Live boldly and keep fighting the good fight!
Until next time,
