Traditional Gender Roles: Archaic or Biblical Truth?

There are so many things happening in the world today that I honestly never thought I’d see, much less have to explain to my kids. Viruses that change our lives and unwarranted instances of violence have really controlled the narrative as of late. But the trend of gender identity is really wearing me out. I hit a breaking point earlier when I saw a news story on Instagram about Alex Rodriguez developing a makeup line for men. How is this real life?! This comes just one day after Demi Lovato announces that she’s non-binary and using they/them pronouns. (Let’s not even go the grammatical piece where they/them make absolutely no sense.) As my Gran would say, have you ever seen the beat?! I simply cannot fathom what is happening to men and women these days.

Let me go ahead and state the obvious. Gender is not fluid – there is no gender spectrum. There are only two genders. It’s really quite simple. The cry as of late is to ‘follow the science!’ Well, biology supports the fact that their are only two genders. Hormones, physical anatomy, emotional response all point toward one of two genders. The fact that someone has to take hormone blockers to suppress their body’s natural state to ‘change genders’ proves that there are only two genders. Most importantly, the creator of all things, the master scientist Himself, says there are only two genders. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

This push for androgyny is nothing more than an affront to God Himself. God created male and female in His own image and removing Him from the world is the enemy’s ultimate goal. The constant blurring of gender lines is in our faces daily. A-Rod hawking men’s makeup, Harry Styles on the cover of Vogue in a dress, Ellen Page becoming Elliot Page. The push for normalization of this behavior is aggressive and relentless. If you speak out for traditional gender roles, you are an archaic Neanderthal who needs to realize it’s 2021. If you think women should dress modestly and support their husbands, you are anti-feminist. If you love a man who fixes cars and shoots guns, then you support ‘toxic masculinity.’ It all plays right into the common theme of today – if you are not in full support of an ideology then you must hate the ideologist.

I refuse to comply with this distorted view of humanity. The only ideology that I consider is the unerring Word of God. God gives us the standard of how we should live. Call it archaic if you will, but I call it absolute truth. Proverbs 31 provides goals, as the kids say, for women. The way we carry ourselves as women of God matters. And I’m not talking about the world’s view of a Godly women, where we all look like the Duggars and have 27 kids and stay at home. You can be a successful, working wife and mother and honor God while doing so. (Stay at home moms included – because they work harder than all of us!) And you can look good doing it – modesty doesn’t mean you lack personal style. It means that your body isn’t on display for the world to see. Ephesians 5:21-33 tells us how to have a Christian household, with husbands loving their wives as Christ loves the church. We were created as helpmates to one another, to love each other and love God.

Friends, do not apologize for being a feminine woman or a masculine man. Do not fall victim to the shaming of our society. These ideas are nothing more than a push from Satan to keep us from honoring our Creator. Be proud of who God made you to be.

Until next time,

Erica Lee
