The Unattainable Quest to be Woke Enough

Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for the blockbuster Broadway musical, Hamilton, publicly groveled recently after the internet expressed dissatisfaction in his new movie, In The Heights. Apparently the movie, which features nearly an entire Latino cast, didn’t cast any Afro-Latino characters in leading roles. Upon its release in theaters and HBO Max, keyboard warriors hung Miranda out to dry on Twitter, saying as a Puerto Rican himself, he should be ashamed for not being truly inclusive. Miranda’s remorseful statement came on the heels of the announcement that the women of the Fast & Furious franchise are angling for an all female spin off. What does one have to do with the other? In Hollywood, and in this disgusting time of cancel culture, nothing is ever enough.

It isn’t enough that Miranda created an entire movie about a Latin suburb; he needed more black representation. It isn’t enough that the Fast franchise is one of the most successful in cinema history, with almost $6 BILLION in revenue to date; we need more female representation. Every movie, TV show, and commercial now has LGBTQIA+ representation. Hallmark came under fire in 2020 for not featuring same sex couples in their classic TV movie line up. After attempting to release a statement stating their traditional familial values, like most other entities today, they capitulated and now there have been movies that feature same sex couples with more on the horizon. Every major corporation has networking groups for black, LGBTQIA+, and female employees to promote inclusion.

Miranda’s unwarranted repentance is just the latest reminder that is will never stop. You will never, ever, please the ‘woke’ police. You’ll never be politically correct enough. You won’t even be black enough, or Latino enough, or women enough. If you’re white, you should apologize for it. If you’re a white male, you should really apologize for it. If you’re a Christian, well, you’re irrelevant because you’re inherently judgmental and hateful. It truly is never ending.

Of course, we all know why this is happening. The tactics used to create division are tried and true and will only increase. The human race has never been more broken than we are right now. Whether it seems like it or not, all of this is nothing more than an attack on God. We were created in His image, all of us, and Satan will never stop trying to remove Him from this world. That is, until He returns for His church and sets His final omniscient plan in motion. (Oh, Jesus come now!)

The issue is the constant pressure to cave to the woke mob and apologize for simply living. The thing is – we have NOTHING to apologize for. Now, if you believe that certain people groups are superior to others and treat them differently, then yes, please, apologize. But if you believe that every single human is made in the image of God and is born with unalienable rights, then you have absolutely nothing to apologize for. You simply cannot allow societal pressure to force you to apologize for God’s masterpiece. We were not created to please man. Isaiah 43:7 tells us exactly why we were created. “Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” We were created for His namesake to spread His gospel and further His kingdom.

In these days where it is becoming increasingly harder to just live, remember for whom you are living. Do not forget his promise in Deuteronomy 31:6. “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” When you feel like you are not enough, remember He is with you and He is always enough.

Until next time,

Erica Lee
